Unfortunately, she couldnât ask Sheena about it since she could understand what Sheena said, but not vice versa. Her curiosity couldnât be completely appeased by merely observing. Besides, she knew Sheena was right. If she was going to live among them, she couldnât expect them to learn her language. She would have to learn theirs.
Once sheâd made up her mind that she had to learn their language, she stopped wearing the translator except when absolutely necessary, knowing that as long as she had it to rely on she would use it as a crutch.
It wasnât easy. Even though she spent most of every day with Sheena, after nearly three weeks, sheâd only managed to accumulate a vocabulary of about a hundred words, and she still didnât know how to make them into sentences, much less carry on a conversation.
It didnât help that Taj, apparently, had a warped sense of humor. As soon as he saw she was struggling to master his language, he began to coach her, and when she repeated it to Sheena, she would either laugh, or look horrified and give Taj a tongue lashing when he came to collect her.
She couldnât trust her own judgment, either. Sometimes heâd coach her with perfect seriousness and it would turn out that heâd taught her something naughty. The next time, his eyes would gleam with amusement and sheâd find out that the words meant exactly what heâd told her they meant. When she, or his mother, fussed about it, he would behave for just long enough she would let her guard down, and then he would teach her something else outrageous. Sheâd been telling him âI like your assâ for almost a week before she discovered that it didnât mean âLight the fireâ. She wouldnât have tumbled to it then, since sheâd grown wary of asking Sheena the meanings of words Taj had taught her, except that he finally burst out laughing.
After that, she went back to wearing the translator.
Taj waited until she was sound asleep, removed it from her ear and refused to give it back to her.
When Danica had searched the cabin thoroughly, she turned to study him suspiciously, her gaze resting speculatively on his loincloth. Grinning, Taj lay back on his bunk, crossed his arms behind his head and invited her to search.
She had to suppose he was accustomed to retiring females. He just couldnât seem to get it through his head that she wasnât the least bit shy. After studying the challenge in his eyes for several moments, she crawled onto the bunk, straddled his thighs, and patted him down.
That was when she discovered that he hadnât underestimated her. Sheâd underestimated him. Heâd known she wouldnât be able to resist the challenge.
The moment she settled, he caught her and rolled over on top of her.
